I recently bought a 1968 Super Reverb, and it has a blackface front panel (I haven’t checked the circuit yet.)  Is this an anomaly, or did some 1968 Fender amps actually get blackface circuitry and panels?

No. Stamped onto the tube chart are two letters. The first denotes the year, the second the month of manufacture. My ’66 Super has “PJ” stamped on its chart, indicating October 1966. My ’65 Deluxe has “OJ”. “N” would mean 1964, etc.

At the Fender factory, a worker would stamp the date on the inside of the chassis near the bias pot adjustment. The week and year.

AB763 is the circuit. Generally speaking, the last two digits are the year the circuit was introduced. If you want to know WHEN it was built, you will need the serial number (stamped into the top metal panel on the back rearof the amp) or, even better, the 2-letter date code on the same label where you found the AB763.
